Elevated Stress = Elevated Cortisol Levels
Though cortisol is a hormone without which human survival is impossible, excess secretion of this hormone is harmful for the body. Cortisol is known as 'stress hormone' as it helps the body mount a stress response. It is produced by adrenal glands. When your body is under stress, you tend to overeat to give your body a satisfied feeling. Now, when your cortisol levels are higher due to stress, this excessive consumption of calories gets converted into fat and is stored in the belly region. Similar studies have suggested that with the presence of high levels of cortisol, the excess fat storage does not take place all over the body but only in the abdominal area.
Stress Changes Eating Patterns
Excessive stress levels in human body trigger neurobiological adaptations that changes eating pattern of the body. This includes the frequency, quantity and the type of food the body craves for. Alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and other appetite-related hormones and hypothalamic neuropeptides all contribute to increasingly compulsive behavior for food. These also induce metabolic changes that promote weight and body fat mass. This process has been proven in a study by Dept. of Psychiatry, Yale University School of medicine. When your body goes through stress, it feels satisfied with binge eating. When it feels that there is no restriction around, the sense of satisfaction that it gets is something it craves for in times of stress.
The Mind Connection
When you are stressed out about something, you tend to feel low about yourself. You feel lost from inside and want to give up every battle in your life. This is the reason that you don't even make a conscious effort of eating clean or eating less. Your mind looks for satisfaction, in whatever form it may be. Hence you fall prey to binge eating and ultimately consuming too much of calories making your fat ultimately.
The solution to this is very simple. Try to stay away from a stressful life. If possible try to meditate daily to have a good mental health as well. Choose a hobby that gives you mental satisfaction. It could be an hour of weight training or a session of badminton.
