What is Stevia?
Stevia is an herb which comes from a plant called Stevia rebaudiana. It is more than two hundred times sweeter than table sugar but has zero calories. Stevia is available in various forms including powder and tablets. The form of stevia depends on the brand of the stevia that you are using. Generally, for a cup of tea, a small pill of stevia is enough.

One table spoon of sugar has around 50 calories. These are high GI (glycemic index) calories which will spike your insulin. Most normal people consume around 10 to 15 table spoons of sugar which includes beverages and snacks. If you cut all this sugar and substitute it with stevia, your body gets a calorie deficit of around 500 to750 calories immediately. Since stevia is a calorie-less sweetener, it won't add any calories to your daily calorie intake. Even with such a small change, you can start losing weight with the calorie deficit that you have created by replacing all the sugar in your diet with stevia. Of course, better results can only be seen when this is complemented with a solid workout.
Safety and Uses
Stevia has been proven to be safe for human consumption. It has been tested and studies show no side effects with its regular use over the long term. Even people with diabetes can consume it. The only thing that needs to be kept in mind is that whatever brand that you are using, make sure that it does not contain maltodextrin or a dextrose mixture in it along with stevia. Dextrose is glucose and maltodextrin is starch. Both contain huge amount of high GI calories and products that contain any of them will defeat the purpose of using stevia. You can use stevia in drinks like tea, coffee, juices or smoothies. You can also use it in preparing baked products like cakes as it also available in powdered form.
